Racing the clock

We’re doing our best to enjoy every last second of summer before school starts back again. With less than 2 weeks left, the countdown has begun. Some are excited (a certain 3 year old who will not only be starting school, but will also be joining the choir at church). And some are not (a mama who is sad to lose her partner in crime).

In the meantime, we’re making “all day pj day” mandatory.

Having popcorn for dinner.

Spending more time outdoors.

Playing lots and lots of dress up.

And staying up way past our bedtime.

We’re also trying to tackle a few home improvement projects. Our latest project was painting the kitchen. Since most of our house is painted in warm, neutral colors, we decided to paint the kitchen a cheery green.

The kitchen started out like this. Very neutral and boring.

The color we chose (Ryegrass), was a bit greener than we expected, especially with the morning light coming in from the windows.

To tone down the green and add texture, we decided to add curtain panels to the breakfast area window (fabric purchased from fabric.com). At only $10 a yard, the navy and white fabric was a steal! Wish I had fixed (de-fluffed) the panel to the right; the kids play hide in seek in the curtains, so they are always out of whack.

We also changed out the light fixture (remember the flimsy one in the first picture) to something a little more substantial and warm. Next up for the kitchen, crown molding, a subway back splash, and convincing G to paint the kitchen door and the kitchen island black. The list just never ends for sweet G!

A few days without the kids

Things were getting pretty wild around here. Dress up clothes were strung from one end of the house to another. At the mere mention of a trip to the grocery store or the gym, MR would run to her playroom and spend hours gathering her “look”. Another hour would be spent trying to convince her to ditch her “look” in favor of something a little more conservative.

Much of the dress up frenzy was in anticipation of a 4-night stay at “Camp Grandparents” in Athens.  The trip marked Hutson’s first overnight stay away from home. MR must have told him a dozen times, “Mama is fun, but Gran C’s even better. She lets us have marshmallows for breakfast”! From Wednesday evening to Sunday morning, the kids got in some time with Gran C and Big Daddy, while G and I acted like celebrities. We had friends over for dinner on Thursday night (stayed up way too late), went to a downtown concert on the square with friends on Friday (stayed up way too late again), and purchased a new “family” car on Saturday with more gadgets than I will ever figure out.

By Sunday afternoon, our celebrity status had come to an end. As soon as the kids returned home, it was more or less the same…piles of dressup clothes scattered around the house, a naked (drooly) baby, lots of noise, dirty diapers, laundry, and sweet hugs and kisses from the kids that make my world go round.

Much to G’s dismay, we’ve named the new car “Cinderella”. Sometimes we call her “Cindy” for short. Coming from an 11 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cindy is a breath of fresh air. She has air conditioned seats, programmable buttons for our garage doors, blue tooth capability, a remote starter, DVD player, back up camera, fold in mirrors, and lots of chrome. She’s pretty. And comfortable. And its a good thing I like her so much becuase I will probably drive her for the next 15 years…

On a completely random note, Hutson has become the newest (unpaid and overworked) Petey Pie’s model. With back to school and the holidays approaching, Petey Pie’s is back in full swing! The gift of grandparents

MR and Huttie are surrounded by an army of “spoil you rotten” grandparents. They are certainly lucky, and so are we, because everyone knows that grandparents are the best (and cheapest) baby holders and entertainers. For the last three weeks, we have gotten to visit with all 5 grandparents. Danny drove up for a long weekend over the fourth of July holiday; Gran C and Big Daddy came the weekend after that to help out with some yard work; and this past weekend, we drove down to Waycross to spend the weekend with Meme and Papa Joe and visit with Danny.

Our time down south couldn’t have been better…

On Friday, we got in a visit with Mema Vonnie and Papa Huey (MR and Huttie’s great grandparents). We also enjoyed some of Meme’s homemade blueberry muffins for Hutson’s birthday celebration. By the looks of MR’s drawing, G and I consumed one to many.

On Saturday, MR and Huttie got in some pool time at Papa Joe and Meme’s house. If you look closely, you will see MR dumping her watering can on top of Papa Joe’s head. I wish I could say this was an isolated incident, but it wasn’t. This went on forever and Papa Joe never uttered a single complaint. See what I mean about a grandparents love?

Much of Saturday evening was spent with Garrett’s mom (Danny), who also lives in Waycross. One of the highlights of our trip was seeing Garrett’s grandmother, Mema, who is suffering from Alzheimer Disease. We often compare MR’s spunky attitude and quick wit to that of Mema’s.

On our past visits to Waycross, Huttie was never well enough to visit with Mema. This time, by the grace of God, we were able to introduce them to one another. The introduction was such a precious memory!

After our visit, Danny treated us to dinner at the country club, where we feasted on shrimp, lobster, crab, fried green tomatoes, and warm chocolate lava cake and vanilla ice cream. My only regret was wearing a high wasted belt. I seriously considering removing it about half way through the meal.

After dinner, we made a quick pit stop to visit with Uncle Skeeter, Sweet Anne, and Will and Kristen. Although they did not share the news with us during our visit, we found out as we were leaving Waycross that Will (Garrett’s first cousin) and his wife Kristen are expecting their first child in February! We are thrilled to add to the Harvey clan! This will make baby #5 (all under the age of four) for the Harvey cousins.

Sunday came way too soon. To soften the blow, we decided to spend the morning at a nearby playground. One of my favorite things about Waycross is that there is a playground on almost every block. This particular playground was requested by MR because it had a merry go round.

G did his best to make the merry go round go as fast as he could.

Not to be outdone, I scaled a two foot rock climbing wall (in flip flops).

Once we were done showing off and earning our “cool badges”, we were forced to return to reality by bouncing on this contraption. It was every bit as awkward as it looked.

Somehow Huttie managed to escape it. He stuck to the swings instead

and took full advantage of the extra set of hands.

Just as we were about to head back to Atlanta, MR reminded Papa Joe that it was a “tradition” for her to ride his tractor. Lucky for her, it didn’t take much convincing…

Papa Joe always lets MR take over the steering

and gives her control of the levers, which makes me a nervous wreck. They drive up and down the street in front of Papa Joe and Meme’s house for what seems like hours.

Goodbyes are always hard, but manageable when combined with hugs, kisses, and baggies full of marshmallows, m&m’s, goldfish, and cookies. A big thanks to Meme and Papa Joe for letting us spend the weekend with them and to Danny for a wonderful Saturday evening! Grandparents truly are the best!

The Birthday Boy

Sweet, sweet Huttie, you are something! You are a child of many names. We mostly refer to you as “Huttie”, but at times you are “Huttie Cat”, “Deanie”, “Brobrie”, and almost always “Houdeanzer” to your sister.

We’ve said it plenty of times, but it’s true, you are all boy. It seems that you were born with the ability to roll cars and trucks, throw toys, climb stairs at full speed, and make silly noises. It’s pretty apparent that you got a double dose of the “bang it and drive mama crazy gene”. If you’re not banging your hands on your chest, your banging two (very loud) toys together. There is rarely a quiet moment with you in the house.

At a year old, you say “dada“, “bye bye“, “hey“, “dog” and “my mama“. You pull up on most anything and can stand on your own for a few seconds at a time. I wouldn’t be surprised if you started walking today or if you waited until you were 15 months old, like your sister. You continue to love to waive and will waive your hand off to get a smile from a stranger.

While you love just about anybody that is willing to hold you, it’s hard to ignore your bond with your daddy. You rarely leave your daddy’s side (or arms) when he is home. Much like your sister and I, he is completely smitten with you.

Sweet Hutson, you are growing so fast! I pray that you will have your daddy’s patience and his desire to go through life with integrity. I pray that you will grow in Christ and that you will always lean on God and your family in times of need. Happy birthday sweet Hutson. We love you!

At 12 months old, you weigh a little over 22 pounds (45%) and are 30 1/4 inches tall (65%). You drink three sippy cups of whole milk a day and eat table foods. We are still working towards breaking you of your morning nap. Most days, you awake around 8. Your bedtime is usually between 7 and 7:30. Your favorite foods are spaghetti, yogurt, Ritz crackers, and rice and eggs.

Fourth of July festivities

Nothing is more American than eating your way through a long holiday weekend. From birthday cake to ballpark food, we made every attempt to take advantage of fourth of July festivities.

G’s mom arrived late Friday night with a cooler full of homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese. For the next four days, she entertained the kids, while G and I worked tirelessly to make sure there were no leftovers.

On Saturday morning, we headed to Griffin to celebrate John Thomas’s second birthday. We don’t see the “Griffin Harvey’s” near enough, but when we do, we always have fun!

On Sunday, we were off to celebrate another birthday. This time we were celebrating our neighbors fiftieth birthday. Thanks to G’s mom, we were able to leave the kids at home to enjoy an afternoon of cold beer and bbq. It was every bit as good as it sounds.

Monday the fourth was spent at Turner Field devouring foot long hot dogs, bags of cotton candy, and handfuls of popcorn. A big win for the Braves and a night of fireworks made the day extra special. We returned home around midnight with two very tired kids.

This marked Huttie’s second trip to Turner Field. He went to his first game when he was a month old!

This is Creswell. He’s one of our favorites at Turner Field. Huttie apparently likes him as much as we do. He spent the entire fireworks show on his new buddy’s lap.

The past two weeks

Vacation left us with loads of laundry, tons of yard work, and piles of mail to go through.

Thankfully, we had plenty of entertainment to keep us going,

a whole lot of cheering along the way,

and a dinner date with the Chick-fil-A cow to look forward to.

Our return home meant a few changes for the little man of the house. The first change was switching Huttie over to whole milk. No more formula. And no more bottles. We also decided to do away with the baby food and have transitioned him to table foods.

Best of all, we were finally able to convince Huttie to hold his own sippy cup. The whole process left me feeling like supermom. And then I was humbled by finding his sippy cup in the toilet. Twice.

A week short of his his first birthday, it’s clear that sweet Huttie is all boy. He climbs to the top of the stairs in a blink of an eye, crawls faster than I can walk, and squeals with delight as I chase him from room to room. He throws toys. Knows no fear. And loves an audience.

Above all, he adores his daddy. He watches his every move. Much like the rest of us, he too thinks that G hung the moon.

Sweet Mary Reese mothers him to the best of her ability. She is the first to his rescue if he’s hurt or in trouble. Most times, she responds by giving him a hug and replying, “boys will be boys.” She is without a doubt, wise beyond her years.

She’s also a pretty good teacher and takes credit for most of her little brothers accomplishments. Today she claimed that she taught him how to yawn.

Bribes and Threats

You know those kids that sit still and smile for the camera? I do. Although they are not my own, I have seen them on facebook, so I know they exists. My two are the total opposite. They squirm, are easily distracted, and rarely quit talking long enough for me to snap a picture. They pick their nose. They whine. And they complain about having to poise for their overbearing, gotta capture the moment, mama. It’s a known fact that lots of tears are shed when mama’s camera comes out.

After 300 attempts to capture a framer of MR and Hutson together, I realized that no amount of m&m’s or “mean mama looks” would tame these two…Not even the homemade tickle stick, made from a broom handle and a duster, could help me achieve my goal.

After days of trying, I threw in the towel. I ate the m&m’s myself, abandoned my mean momma look, left behind my tickle stick, and accepted the fact that a vacation is about far more than capturing the money shot.

Vacations are about laughter,

memories,

cheap frills,

sweet hugs,

and eating whatever your heart desires…for me that included a 2 pound bag of m&m’s in a week. G and MR polished off two or three gallons of ice cream. And sweet sweet Huttie ate his weight x 4 in Pop-Tarts and sand.

Almost caught up…

When my sister realized that I had over 800 pictures to edit from our vacation, she gasped and said that “I was in a situation.” Her statement couldn’t have been more true. I am the queen of procrastination, which is why I’ve sat on those 800 pictures for the last two weeks.

When it came down to allotting time to either a) blog or b) hit the gym, I quickly decided to choose the lesser of the two evils. After all, blogging can be done on the couch (bra-less) with a cup of coffee in hand…
